Donna Eden, Energy Medicine

“Guided by the popular notion that if your intention is strong enough you will succeed – ‘Energy flows where attention goes’ – [some people] only gather discouragement,
cynicism, and self-loathing [when they don’t succeed’].  The opposite is also true: ‘Attention goes where energy flows’.  To change your mind, change your energy.  You usually can’t will happiness.  You usually can’t will pain to stop.  You usually cannot even will inspiration.  But you can shift your energies in ways that support your happiness, diminish your pain and increase your inspiration….If your energies are free for healing and creativity, your mind will follow.”

This book is worth every penny and more and I’m not surprised that they’ve sold more than 160,000 copies.  Although it’s hefty at just over 400 pages, I’m very grateful that I packed it for my trip around the world as I refer to it often.

Donna is quite well known in the Energy Therapy world and having the special gifts she has (e.g. she can literally see someone’s energy field, like you are seeing these letters on the page now) and she’s using this book to teach the rest of us how to use our own bodies and energy system to help ourselves get better, physically and emotionally.

The book is well laid out, with interesting anecdotes from her work, scientific research, theory and lots of practical routines.  I love her approach to healing: ‘I am ambivalent about the word ‘healer’.  It implies doing something to someone else, holding power over the other, separating the healer from the healed.  Because the healing relationship feels sacred to me, I think of it more of being a minister – ministering to body, mind and soul.’

Donna hasn’t always had it easy and so she relates to what it feels like to be stuck and in physical or emotional pain; ‘With my own personal history of health challenges, I could be the poster girl for ‘We teach what we need to learn’. I also know that when you heal yourself, you discover what no one can teach you.  It is an initiation into the very foundation of life, and it organically seems to follow that you have compassion for people who are frightened about their health and want to offer the harvest of your experience.’

Probably of most practical value for me has been incorporating her ‘5 minute energy routine’ (it takes me around 8 minutes) into my morning practise.  Click here to see a variation of it (will open in a new window).

Donna advocates a sensible approach to well-being and taking responsibility for ourselves ‘…while sincerely stressing the value of professional intervention, I do not want to undercut my primary message and deep conviction that there is much you can do to care for yourself.   Ultimately it is you who is responsible for your health, and the more you know and the more you do for yourself, the better your health will fare.’

The book covers

  • Energy testing
  • How to keep your energies humming
  • The meridian system
  • The chakras
  • The aura
  • The 5 rhythms

  • and more.

And also offers extensive advice and practical exercises to

Most exercises come with drawings (click here to see examples; will open in new window) and is very easy to follow.

She also offers these ’How to’s:
