Michael Brown, Alchemy of the Heart Book Review

If there was ever a book that sped up my spiritual growth in rapid fashion then it’s this one.

Fellow South African, Michael Brown makes no bones about what it takes to awaken, and delivers a very empowering message that the only one responsible for your world and what’s in it - is you!

“By continuing to behave as if we can authentically transform our circumstance by imposing our will upon the outside world we constantly enter revolutionary behaviour. The very word revolutionary reveals the outcome – we inevitably revolve into similar circumstances from which we are attempting to extricate ourselves and often worse.”

I also loved his message of encouragement for each of us to be ourselves and to stop (as Byron Katie would say) arguing with reality; resisting what is is a sure recipe for pain. And of course, there is the ever-present paradox between ‘accepting what is’ and ‘creating what you desire’ – moving from ‘either/or’ to ‘both/and’.

“The culmination of our quest for authenticity is an awakening into an awareness of what we are as opposed to who we think we are supposed to be.”

The culmination of our quest for integrity is in the radiating our hearts waking vision as opposed to trying to fulfil a dream someone else has for us.”

The culmination  of our quest for intimacy is when we honour our life experience as it is instead of behaving as if it were supposed to be different.”

Michael strikes me as a non-nonsense man, in a spiritual way of course :-)   He is pretty clear about the fact that sometimes in life, we as human beings will experience pain; and that the real issue at stake is not if that will happen, but rather how we deal with it when it does:

“Pain and discomfort do not come to hurt us; they come to reveal where we are already hurting. Pain and discomfort do not cause suffering. Reacting to our pain and discomfort as if something is wrong causes suffering.”

I recommend this book to all, especially if you’ve been on the spiritual path for a while; Michael offers no rehashing of often-repeated saying, but instead offers a modern, practical and strong message of self-responsibility and awakening.
