The Genie in your Genes by Dawson Church
Most of us probably grew up hearing that some things were so because it is ‘in our genes’. Whether it was our predisposition to be overweight, or depressed, or have a bad heart – or to be happy, or healthy, it was simply down to our genes.
The (quite disempowering) assumption was that there was pretty much nothing we could do it about as it was after all, in our genes!
Come along ‘The Genie in your Genes’ by Dawson Church which provides hundreds of scientifically researched examples of how that assumption is simply not true and how, in fact, we can and do affect our genes all the time. It has now been proven that “many genes are being turned on and off – every day – by your beliefs, feelings and attitudes. Every thought you think ripples throughout your body, affecting your immune system.”
Drawing on, amongst others, the work of Bruce Lipton (‘The Biology of Belief’) Dawson goes on to share over 300 scientific studies showing you how easy you can improve your levels of vitality and happiness across a range of diseases like AIDS, cancer and depression.
A fervent supporter of the benefits of EFT, Dawson also explores other Energy Psychology techniques, meditation and active relaxation techniques and concludes effectively that “DNA is not Destiny”; your genes may be a blueprint of certain characteristics but you have an enormous amount of power to turn genes on and off towards better physical, emotional and spiritual health.
The book covers such diverse topics as the placebo effect, the effect of prayer on healing, how your beliefs affect your health, how PTSD is treated successfully in a very short time, to name but a few. I found a good balance between laymen’s language and anecdotes and solid, scientific research.
Random quotes from this very inspiring work:
“If I told patients to raise their blood levels of immune globulins or killer Tcells, no one would know how. But if I can teach them to love themselves and others fully, the same change happens automatically. The truth is: Love heals.”Bernie Siegel, MD
“Several studies show that what one thinks about one’s health is one of the most accurate predictors of longevity ever discovered.”Larry Dossey, MD
Far from who and what we are being determined by our genes, we are rewriting the expression of our genes in every second, by our choices of what to do, say and think.
This research reminds us that we hold many of the levers of healing in our own hands. It makes us aware that it is not doctors, hospitals, acupuncturists, homeopaths, chiropractors, energy workers, or other health professionals who determine our sickness and health. They can tilt the balance, but not nearly as much as we can.
Our beliefs – true or false, positive or negative, creative or destructive – do not simply exist in our minds; they interact with the infinite probabilities of a quantum universe, and they affect the cells of our bodies, contributing to the expression of various genetic potentials.
Meditation has been shown to lower blood pressure improve resting heart rate, reduce the incidence of strokes, heart disease and cancer; diminish chronic pain; reduce anxiety and depression; and ameliorate many other diseases. If meditation was a drug, it would be considered medical malpractice for a physician to fail to prescribe it.
“Based on what we know of the plasticity of the brain, we can think of things like happiness and compassion as skills that are no different from learning to play a musical instrument or tennis…it is possible to train our brains to be happy.”Neuroscientist Richard Davidson
Prolonged stress will lead you to produce more cortisol (stress hormone). Prolonged relaxation will lead you to produce more DHEA (the most common hormone in your body and is associated with cell repair, many health-promoting function and longevity).
“If you dont break your ropes while you’re alive, do you think ghosts will do it after?”Rumi
